Peter O’Connor

Peter has nearly 30 years’ experience working in drama and arts education in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.  He is a specialist in the use of drama pedagogy across curriculum areas, within public health campaigns, and with students with special needs. 

Peter was the recipient of the AATE (American Alliance for Theatre and Education) 2006 Distinguished Dissertation Award, for his 2003 PhD research entitled Reflection and Refraction: The Dimpled Mirror of Process Drama which examined the use of process drama within New Zealand’s national public health campaign to counter stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.

In 2006 Peter was appointed adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Sydney.  He is teaching graduate papers in Drama Education for the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Social Work and Education in Auckland in 2008.

In 2007 Peter was invited guest lecturer at both the University of Victoria BC Canada, and the National Institute of Education in Singapore.  He returned  to teach in Singapore in 2008, and again in 2009.

In 2009 Peter is working part-time for the University of Melbourne, as Associate Professor in the Artistic and Creative Education Department. 

His extensive publication record includes texts on drama education, numerous chapters and articles in refereed journals and books.   He has served on the editorial boards of two international drama education journals—he is currently on the international editorial boards for RiDE (Research in Drama Education), and IDEA/Applied Theatre Researcher, an online journal hosted by Griffith University.

He has been an invited keynote presenter at conferences in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Jamaica.  He was an advisor to the Hong Kong SAR government on the establishment of drama in education in the primary and secondary sectors, and in July 2007 was invited to participate in the first World Creativity Summit in Hong Kong.

Peter was previously the National Education Manager for the Office of the Race Relations Conciliator.  He served as President of the New Zealand Foundation for Peace Studies for many years, as well as on the Board.  In his recent role on contract as National Facilitator for Drama with the New Zealand Ministry of Education he was responsible for overseeing the national implementation of a new drama curriculum (2000—2005).
