Briar O’Connor |
|
Briar completed her Master of Arts degree in Sociology at the University of Auckland, graduating with First Class Honours in 1999. Her Master’s research investigated how and why people make meaning from mass-produced souvenirs. Her academic interests include tourism, museum and cultural studies, and Te Kete Aronui—Maori arts and experimental archaeology, and she has published from her studies. Briar has worked as a social researcher since 1999, with universities and NGOs. Before working full time for Applied Theatre Consultants Ltd she worked with the Alcohol and Public Health Research Unit (APHRU), directed a University of Auckland support programme for Stage One Maori and Pasifika students, and then worked on contract as National Secondary Schools Arts Coordinator—Drama for the Ministry of Education. During this time Briar also conducted scoping exercises for the Ministry of Education and co-ordinated annual national Drama hui. As director of Applied Theatre Consultants Ltd, Briar manages the production, research and evaluation side of the company. She has delivered Everyday Theatre since 2005, and was part of the initial devising process. She was co-writer for both Gotcha and Open the Loop.
